How Do Moffett Forklifts Maintain Their Competitive Advantage?

It is not easy establishing a competitive advantage in today’s world much less sustain it. For every product and service that exists, there exist several competitor products and services trying to offer the same benefits for lesser cost or outdo the original by providing even more features. When you add this competitiveness to the technical intricacies of industries, such as material handling, it is clear to see why establishing and maintaining competitive advantage would be a mammoth task. Yet, Moffett piggyback forklifts accomplish this task repeatedly. Over 45 countries use Moffett forklifts and there are over 55,000 Moffett forklifts material handling companies and warehouses use in the United States alone.

This is because the benefits provided by this particular type of forklift simply outweigh those provided by other brands. It is a credit to the excellence and quality of Hiab, the manufacturer of Moffett forklifts, that they have been able to sustain this competitive edge over their rivals for over 70 years, since their inception.

This article shall look to discuss how Moffett forklifts have been able to establish and maintain their competitive advantage in such a difficult industry for all this time when there are changing requirements and newer competitors popping up all the time. Not to mention the safety regulations imposed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have a stifling impact on forklift manufacturers worldwide.

Yet, despite all the odds, Moffett forklifts consistently achieve superior performance and efficiency in the material handling world.

1.    The Design

The number one feature that distinguishes Moffett forklifts from the rest is their design. When Hiab introduced Moffett forklifts, it was at a time when everyone was doing the same thing. As such, the design of Moffett truck mounted forklifts was an innovation the likes of which the material handling industry had never seen before. The conventional forklift that was used, and still is used, was designed with a counterbalance at the back to counteract the weight of the load lifted by the forks. This was flawed in the sense that if the weight of the load exceeded the load of the counterbalance, the forklift would tip over.

However, Moffett fork trucks fixed this issue by eliminating the counterbalance at the back altogether and instead introduced hydraulic stabilizers. These hydraulic stabilizers are located at the front of the truck, next to the front wheels. They lower when the horizontally moving mast lifts a load, thus providing extra and better stability than the conventional forklifts. The forklift itself is most stable when the horizontally moving mast extends outwards fully. This novel design has allowed the Moffett forklifts to tinker with physics and stabilize the combined center of gravity of the forklift and the load in the “Triangle of Stability”. As such, fleet managers everywhere hark for this forklift as it provides better stability.

2.    Cost Effective

The second reason Moffett forklifts have been able to achieve and sustain a competitive advantage is that they allow businesses to cut their costs, unlike other forklifts. Due to its compact size, lightweight and Lift system, the Moffett is able to mount onto the back of trucks that transport the material from one place to another. As such, this saves transportation costs for businesses where they would have had to incur extra costs in order to transport the forklift to the site. Not to mention, this saves tremendous time as well for the operators since they can get to work as soon as they reach the destination sites.

3.    Safety

Moffett forklifts mitigated the dangers of using a forklift to a significant extent. This was due to their exceptional and latest safety features such as:

  1. Interlocking seat belt for the driver
  2. Overhead guard, test by ROPS (Rollover Protective Structure) and FOPS (Falling Object Protective Structure)
  3. Maximum visibility all around the forklift (360 degrees)
  4. Flashing beacon, work lights and reverse bleeper
  5. LED road light for transport on truck or trailer

Even used Moffett forklifts, if purchased from reliable retailers such as Bobby Park Truck and Equipment, can provide better safety than most new forklifts of other brands. As such, it is the ability of the Moffett forklifts to keep operators safe that has made them desirable over their rivals.

After all, the number one priority for businesses is keeping their employees safe no matter what the cost and the forklift industry was notorious for having one of the highest accident rates in the country. As such, the introduction of the Moffett with these safety features put the minds of business owners and operators to ease. That is why to this day, Moffett forklifts are preferred all over the world.
